HISTORY OF THE MLK DAY PARADE

The history of the MLK Day Parade is deeply intertwined with the civil rights movement and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The parade has been a significant event in honoring King's life and achievements, reflecting the unity and diversity of the American people. Here are some key points about the history of the MLK Day Parade:

  • Early Recognition: The first state to recognize King's birthday as a holiday was Arizona in 1987, with Governor Bruce Babbitt proclaiming it as "Martin Luther King Jr./Civil Rights Day."

  • National Holiday: The third Monday of January was designated as a federal holiday in 1983, with the first nationwide observance occurring in 1986.
