OKC MLK Alliance Statement on Vandalism at the Clara Luper Sit-In Plaza
The OKC MLK Alliance is deeply troubled by the vandalism discovered overnight at the Clara Luper Sit-In Plaza Sculpture. This monument honors one of Oklahoma’s most significant contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and stands as a testament to the courage, leadership, and sacrifice of Clara Luper and the young activists who helped shape a more just society.
Acts of hostility toward historical symbols such as this are wholly inappropriate and undermine the shared values of unity, respect, and progress that our community continues to uphold. This behavior attempts to damage not only a physical structure but the important legacy it represents. We will not allow that legacy to be diminished.
The OKC MLK Alliance firmly condemns this act and remains committed to preserving the integrity of the spaces and stories that define our city’s civil rights history. We urge the community to join us by standing with us in valuing and respecting these historic spaces and in continuing the work of justice, education, and peaceful advocacy that Clara Luper championed.
